VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTS
The 2012 Jeep Compass sees some minor trim changes following its model-year 2011 freshening. This compact SUV shares its basic design with the Jeep Patriot and Dodge Caliber. Compass seats 5 and comes in base Sport, mid-line Latitude, and top-end Limited trim levels. Each is available with front-wheel drive or one of two all-wheel-drive systems. The standard Freedom Drive I automatically shifts power to wheels that need traction and includes a switch to lock in a 50/50 front/rear power split. The optional Freedom Drive II includes hill-start assist, hill-descent control, and a locking rear differential. Standard on the front-drive Sport and Latitude is a 158-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Optional on those models and standard on all other Compasses is a 172-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the Sport. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves much like an automatic is optional on the Sport and standard otherwise. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control are standard on the Limited. A sunroof and hard drive for storing digital-music files are optional on the Latitude and Limited. A navigation system is optional on the Limited.
