2023 Kia Telluride vs. 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L: The Ultimate Comparison

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Powertrain

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers Greenville drivers two different engine options. Base models use a 3.6-liter V6 capable of producing 290 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can upgrade to a 5.7-liter V8, which offers 357 horsepower. While the V6 can tow up to 6200 pounds, the V8 has a towing capacity of 7200 pounds. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.

The Telluride offers only one engine, a V6 model capable of producing 291 horsepower. Towing capacity maxes out at 5,000 pounds. Base Telluride models use front-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive is available.

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Interior and Cargo

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L and the Telluride boast very similar, spacious, upscale cabins, which drivers expect of a large SUV.  The Grand Cherokee L can seat six or seven people, while the Telluride can handle seven or eight. There are heated front seats on both the Telluride and the Grand Cherokee L. Regarding head room, the front shoulder room is comparable between both SUVs. The front leg room  There's very similar leg room in the second row too.

There's more cargo volume on the Kia Telluride, though, with 21 cubic feet compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee L's 17.2 cubic feet. However, the cargo volume is similar when you put down the third-row seats at 87 cubic feet for the Kia Telluride, and 84.6 cubic feet for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Both the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and some models of the Kia Telluride come equipped with a power liftgate, making the cargo space much easier to access.

Higher quality materials can be found on higher trims of the Kia Telluride. Jeep Grand Cherokee L is much the same but tops the Kia Telluride in terms of the luxury feel that can be provided at higher trims. Open-pore wood trim and quilted leather upholstery are part of what comes on the higher trims of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. In contrast, the higher trims of the Kia Telluride do come with Nappa leather upholstery - but it's not quilted.

While it's clear that there's more cargo space and seating in the Kia Telluride, there are various storage space features found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee L that use its space well. In terms of interior quality, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L gives drivers the most choices for the interior they want. From basic to luxurious, you get it all with the Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Safety

Both the Kia Telluride and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L come equipped with high levels of advanced technology and many standard safety features. Both models have adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe following distance between you and the car in front of you. It pairs well with the automatic emergency braking also found on both vehicles. Both vehicles are also equipped with blind spot monitoring technology as well. Lane departure warning and lane keep assist are standard on both the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Kia Telluride, keeping you safe on the highway.

Off the highway, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L comes equipped with a backup camera paired with front and rear park assist technologies to make parking a breeze. Kia has a similar technology on the Kia Telluride with a rear view monitor paired with dynamic parking guidance standard. Ultimately, when choosing a practical, three-row SUV, you're getting the safest of SUVs on the market regardless of your choice.

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Technology

Both the Kia Telluride and Jeep Grand Cherokee L are equipped with high levels of advanced technology and equipment. If you need to stare at a big screen to get your infotainment needs on the road, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L may not be for you. With that said, it comes with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen fully integrated with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Serius XM radio. This compares with the Kia Telluride's 12.3-inch infotainment screen, which is also integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but not Serius XM standard.

There are also higher-end speaker systems offered on the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Drivers can choose from the standard six-speaker setup found on other Jeep Grand Cherokee models, a nine-speaker Alpine audio setup, or a high-end, 19-speaker McIntosh speaker setup. On the Kia Telluride, the standard speaker setup is available, and drivers can only upgrade to a 10-speaker Harman/Kardon speaker setup.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L can be upgraded to have in-dash navigation with real-time traffic and weather updates, in addition to wireless connectivity to its infotainment systems through smartphones. Passengers in the back seats can have their own 10.1-inch screens mounted on the back of the front seats of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L. These screens are fully integrated with Wi-Fi connectivity and Amazon Fire for a robust passenger entertainment setup.

The Kia Telluride does have on-board WiFi for its passengers and a technology called driver talk. This technology amplifies the driver's voice to the back two rows for easy family communication overall. Its infotainment system is also equipped with real-time weather and traffic updates as well. On higher trims of the Kia Telluride, rear screens are also offered. However, they come with USB connectivity in lieu of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L's WiFi connectivity and Amazon Fire capabilities.

Aside from screen size, it's clear that the Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers more when it comes to practical, driver-friendly technology for South Carolinians.

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Features

The Kia Telluride and the Jeep Grand Cherokee L have modern infotainment systems that run on large screens, and available add-ons include premium audio systems and leather seating.

However, the Grand Cherokee L boasts a few extra features that the Telluride does not. For instance, the Jeep's off-road optimized features, such as traction management, three available all-wheel drive systems, and hill descent control, are stronger than the Telluride's equivalents. And while the Kia has an adjustable air suspension system for the rear wheels, the Grand Cherokee L's air suspension covers both axles.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L also offers drivers extra interior luxury features. For instance, four-zone climate control and open-pore wood trim surfaces are not available on the Telluride. Also of note, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L's larger fuel tank means South Carolina families can spend less time at the pump and more on the roads.

Grand Cherokee L vs Telluride: Off-Roading Capabilities

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L has more ground clearance at 8.5" compared to the Kia Telluride's 8" standard clearance. This extra half-inch of clearance can make all the difference in the world regarding off-road capabilities. Jeep's affinity for consistently producing vehicles with a high degree of off-road capability here takes the cake.

While the Kia Telluride can be upgraded to have a similar level of ground clearance, it's just not built for off-roading like a Jeep. That's partially due to the readdition of the quadra lift air suspension on the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

Updates for the 2023 Model Year

Not offered on the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L but found in the 2023 model is the quadra lift air suspension.  The quadra lift air suspension compares favorably against the suspension found in many Kia Telluride models, though an air suspension is available on some higher trims. This technology is part of the lynchpin of what sets this Jeep apart from its competitors as a true off-roading champion.
