2021 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - The Return of a Legend

The first Jeep Wagoneer entered the automotive scene in 1962. Its distinctive styling and innovative technology soon made the Wagoneer an instant classic. Among other firsts, the Wagoneer was the first 4x4 vehicle to use an automatic transmission and independent suspension. The famed Quadratrac 4-wheel drive system first appeared in 1973.

The original Wagoneer was notable for making features such as power steering and a power tailgate standard on all trims. It also provided air conditioning as standard. Because of these and other innovations, the Wagoneer is considered the beginning of the modern luxury SUV market.

In 1984, market pressures led to a shift in the Wagoneer lineup. Jeep introduced a smaller version of the Wagoneer, renaming the original the Grand Wagoneer. The original Wagoneer served as an upscale version of the Cherokee until the retirement of the Wagoneer name in 1991.

Historic Name, Modern Luxury

Thirty years after the last mass-market Wagoneer, Jeep has decided to bring the name back on a new three-row SUV. Though exact details of price and trim offerings are unavailable, the company did suggest a few features which may make it onto the full-production Grand Wagoneer. The company has also suggested that a new Wagoneer will be available for 2021. However, Jeep has yet to release more information about the standard model.

The 2021 Grand Wagoneer is based on the RAM 1500 platform, which means the new Jeep will probably offer the same basic engine options. However, in a reference to its heritage, the 2021 Grand Wagoneer will offer a new Quadra-Drive II 4x4 system. As with all new-model Jeep vehicles, the Grand Wagoneer will offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain variant.

The Grand Wagoneer, or at least some of its trims, will offer three infotainment screens, including a 12.1-inch central display and a 1o.25-inch display on the front passenger side. The second-row passengers will have a 10.25-inch environment control panel and independent 10.1-inch video displays offering wireless streaming.

Conclusion

The Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer concepts promise to be a handsome addition to the Jeep brand lineup. The carmaker has been missing a three-row offering since the demise of the Commander in 2009. With their upscale styling, clever highlights and innovative features, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are more than capable of filling this space.
