How does the Wrangler 4xe Work?

The Wrangler 4xe is the first JeepⓇ vehicle to offer a plug-in hybrid variant. The automaker plans to eventually offer plug-in hybrid options across its lineup, with the Renegade and Compass expected to roll out plug-in variants in the next few years. And as the first hybrid JeepⓇ vehicle, the Wrangler 4xe is off to a strong start.

The 4xe works by pairing a 270-horsepower inline-4 gas engine with two electric motors. The vehicle is rated for 21 miles of electric-only driving, with a combined fuel economy of 49 electric miles per gallon. And when the battery does get depleted, there are plenty of ways to recharge. The Wrangler 4xe offers drivers an E-Save drive mode, which uses the gas engine to maintain or add charge to the battery. Regenerative braking is also available. The Wrangler 4xe can recharge in 12 hours using a level 1 charger or 2 hours at a 32-amp Level 2 charger.

New Engine, Traditional Performance

Of course, the Wrangler 4xe remains a JeepⓇ SUV at heart. Though the electric motors running alongside the gas engine may be a new addition, the 4xe retains the performance and capabilities which JeepⓇ buyers expect from their vehicles.

With a whopping 10 inches of ground clearance and a 3500-pound towing capacity, the Wrangler 4xe is poised to outperform the competition both on and off the grid. The Wrangler even stows its hybrid battery higher on the vehicle than some competitors do, further diminishing the risk of puncture when off-roading.

The Wrangler 4xe is available in three trims. Two versions of the vehicle offer leather accents, while the third is outfitted for off-road adventure. Thus, the Wrangler 4xe lineup offers plenty of choices for Spartanburg drivers.
